Your students will glean more from the play and the production by participating in The Play’s the Thing. Both the pre-show and/or post-show sessions encourage critical perception and analysis. Teaching artists visit your classroom and engage the students in activities and discussion that cover the IRT’s production concept, parts of the script, the characters, themes, dramatic structure, theatre etiquette, and historical background.

If you’re attending a performance at IRT, pair it with a session for only $3 per student!

Fees: $75 for a standalone session. $3 per student if booked in conjunction with an IRT Student Matinee.

The IRT’s professional teaching artists are ready to lead your students in examining your choice of Shakespearean elements which include the use of literary devices and meter, the effect of imagery on the audience and the performer, the characters and their motivations, and story and themes along with their current relevance. Through highly interactive, fun exercises your students will see how understanding these components enhances their study and appreciation of Shakespeare. This session can be focused on the play your students are studying, or we can present a general introduction to Shakespeare. This program is perfect to kick off your unit or use at the end as an assessment.

Fees: $85 per session for Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, or a general Shakespeare overview. $100 per session for Hamlet, Othello, The Taming of the Shrew, or Twelfth Night.

If you want a class on ANY theatrical element or are looking to use drama to enhance your unit of study, then this fully customizable program is for you. Call or email today to discuss your ideas!

Programs designed for students in grades 9-12.

Fees: $85 per session. May vary depending on request.

Good writing and good acting both require artists to get to know and build their characters – to "walk a mile in their shoes." In this workshop, students will examine various costume shoes (provided by the IRT) and make creative inferences about the characters who might wear them. Hands-on observation, group discussion, prewriting and writing, led by professional writer Julie Patterson (Indiana Partnership for Young Writers) will provide students with the foundations they can use to write longer narrative and dramatic pieces. This program is ideal for grades 3-7.

Fees: $95 per session.

There is a maximum of 30 students per session. Teachers are encouraged to remain in the classroom and participate in the activities alongside students. Schools more than 50 miles from IRT will incur an incremental mileage fee. Financial assistance is available for all AIC programming thanks to The Alan and Linda Cohen Education Fund.
