Beginners will be able to learn the basics in a safe and comfortable environment, while experienced young actors will get a chance to flex their muscles alongside a new group of friends and an experienced staff of teachers. All classes are taught by IRT staff and artists. Parents are invited to join students on the final day of camp to see your students' skill-building work in action.

• WHAT IT IS: Stage One is our brand new one-week introductory acting skills camp. Students will get instruction from IRT artists in acting, musical theatre, dance, movement, voice, and Shakespeare. While students of all experience levels are welcome, this camp is best for students giving acting a try for the first time. Instructors will focus on building a character, making bold choices, and using your voice and body to communicate. All classes are taught by IRT staff and artists. Parents are invited to join students on the final day of camp to see your students' skill-building work in action.

• What if I have dates already planned this summer that conflict with these camps?
  • That's OK! Step On Stage is designed to accommodate busy summer schedules. Just ensure we know about your conflicts in advance, and we can work around them.
• What is the schedule of payment? Do I have to put down a deposit?
  • At the time of reservation a $100 non-refundable deposit is required. Payment may be made in full or by installment, but the full amount due must be paid by May 24th, 2019.
• Are students ages 8-18 in the same class?
  • No. We divide students into two groups for the instructional day - ages 8-12 and 13-18. Students may be combined in whole group activities such as warm-ups, performances, or at lunch time. 
• What does a typical day look like at Summer Workshops?
  • Students begin the day with warmups, and transition into a Morning Meeting to go over the day's agenda. From there students begin a rotation around the building, much like a typical school day. The bulk of each day is spent in acting instruction, with the "elective" classes like dance, musical theatre, Shakespeare, movement and voice rounding out the instructional day. 
• Where do your instructors come from?
  • Our instructors are working artists and teachers from around central Indiana. Our faculty has been seen working and performing at IRT, the Phoenix Theatre, Dance Kaleidoscope, Civic Theatre and Jr. Civic, Actors Theatre of Indiana, IndyFringe and many more. The combined teaching years among our faculty exceeds 100 years of experience. Your students are in great hands!
• Do you have camp counselors?
  • Yes! Our Summer Workshops couldn't run without our team of college interns. This team is made up of college students from around Indiana, and sometimes the country, who come to us through contacts in theatre and education departments. Our interns work closely with faculty to monitor students in class and throughout the day.

• WHAT IT IS: The IRT Summer Shakespeare Conservatory is an immersion into the creative process of theatre. Young people with a passion for the performing arts learn about theatre-making from professional actors working in the field, as well as from their peers. The mission of Summer Conservatory is to develop and train young talent in a supportive community setting; to explore theatre as a collaborative art form requiring discipline and commitment; and to provide youth with access to theatre professionals on a daily basis. Curriculum will focus on building skills in acting, voice, diction, and movement, with an emphasis on Shakespeare. Additionally, students in Conservatory will collaborate with instructors and a director to create and stage a culminating performance based on the works of Shakespeare. This performance will take place on the OneAmerica Mainstage on July 12th, and is open to friends and family. 
• HOW TO ENROLL: Enrollment is by audition only. See information below.

Because Summer Shakespeare Conservatory provides an intensive experience and requires a whole summer of collaborative work, students are required to audition for this program. Space is limited, and all auditioning students may not be accepted to the program. 

AUDITION DATES: March 19, 20 and April 2, 3, 9, 10 from 5:30-6:30PM.

Students should prepare a monologue from the approved list below. All students should bring a headshot or recent photo to the audition.

• How do I schedule an audition?
  • Contact IRT directly at 317.635.5277 to schedule your audition. Be prepared to give your preferred date, your name, email and phone, and your child’s name and age. There are a limited number of spots available on each audition day so please schedule your audition early.
• What kind of audition piece should I prepare?
  • See the section above to download the pre-selected audition pieces. Each student should prepare a single monologue from these selections. Choose one specifically from your age group, or use the all-ages monologue. Your audition piece should take 60-90 seconds. 
• Should I bring a headshot and resume? 
  • Yes. Your headshot does not need to be professional; a snapshot will suffice. Bringing a resume is encouraged, but optional. Parents will fill out an audition form for all participating students.
• What will happen at the audition?
  • IRT staff will ask all auditioning students to enter the audition room at the same time. Parents will remain in the waiting area. After a group warmup (vocal and physical) students will perform their prepared monologue. Staff may ask students to perform it again, offering some direction for the performance. Students may also be asked to cold read Shakespeare text. After all monologues, staff will lead students in group exercises and a Q&A session about the goals of conservatory and some details. Then, IRT staff will return to the waiting area to hold a short Q&A with parents. The whole process should take roughly 45 minutes to one hour, depending on the number of students. 
• Where can I park?
  • Metered parking is available on the streets surrounding IRT. Circle Center Mall parking is also available. If event rates apply, ask the IRT staff member on duty for a discount parking pass. 
• Are there scholarships available?
  • Yes. A limited number of need-based scholarships and payment plans are available. Applications for financial aid will be available at the audition, and can be downloaded from IRTLIVE.COM/SUMMER.
• What if my student is interested in the Step On Stage or Stage One camp?
  • The Step On Stage and Stage One camps do not require an audition.Those camps welcome students of all experience levels and are enrolled on a first-come-first-serve basis. 

• What if I have dates already planned this summer that conflict with Conservatory?
  • Conservatory is an intensive learning experience that requires consistent attendance to build an ensemble. Being absent from the program can be detrimental to this progress. If you have a vacation conflict, or are participating in other camps this summer, we suggest participating our Step On Stage or Stage One program, which has more leeway for missed dates. Students with more than three days of known conflicts at auditions may not be accepted into the program. 
• What is the schedule of payment? Do I have to put down a deposit?
  • Students accepted into Summer Shakespeare Conservatory will need to have a $200 non-refundable deposit placed by May 3rd, 2019. Payment may be made in full or by installment, but the full amount due must be paid prior to the start of Conservatory on June 17th.
