Reviews
Wonderful show!! The acting was superb, and the set looked amazing. Highly recommend!
We saw Guess Who's Coming to Dinner last night and it was riveting. The set is grand and impressive, and the performance was spot on. Clever and challenging, funny and heartbreaking. We loved it.
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is one of the best productions we have ever seen at IRT. The actors, story, direction, and set design are exemplary. When one recalls the time period in which the play occurs - the 60s - the context may seem dated, but it is not. Human relationships are always valid, whatever their problems. We were emotionally touched by this movie when it played to audiences then and are equally touched by the play today.
Each character brought to the stage their history and this viewer felt its impact on this one day in time. This play makes you ask yourself, "Who am I and what do I really believe when the situation is no longer rhetorical?" I saw the movie several times but it was not like being there. This play gives you a seat at the table and I would tell theater goers to pull up the chair and stay for the meal.
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is the most powerful play I've seen and so poignant for this season in our country. I wept, laughed, and prayed ...for where we were in 1967, where we are now 50 years later, and where we long to be. Beautifully done! Don't miss this incredible show! Such a redemptive and hopeful message. To pursue peace and reconciliation the world needs a big round table and this is ours...
Johnson, Gravatt and Derricks stole the show. Amazing energy and talent! I couldn't imagine how they would make this play as powerful to this generation as it was to the two generations beforehand--but they did! Excellent job IRT and cast!
Run don’t walk to get tickets to see this play if you don’t already have them. Although it’s been many years, we all know the movie and the basic plot, but this play goes beyond the movie. It is funny, poignant, well acted and the set is stunning. It seems so modern yet was written in 1967. We’ve had tickets to IRT for many years and this play is one of the best.
What a wonderful day at the theater! Skillfully acted with empathy, courage and understanding. The production was top notch and the set, striking! All of this in a beautifully restored and maintained theater. Perfection!
About the Play
Can love conquer all?
It’s 1967 and the world is changing, but the Draytons are open minded and forward thinking—until their white daughter brings home a black fiancé. Cultures clash and family ties are tested in this witty and thoughtful look into the power of the human heart.
